Nine years old boy gets his life back.

A nine-year- old kid presented to us with uncontrolled seizures for last one year. He was absolutely all right had fall in school while playing with friends. He was okay hence no medical attention was sought but next day he had seizures and he was admitted to hospital under neurosurgery care. CT and MRI scan revealed a small? blood clot in the brain, which is quite a routine scenario. He was discharged however he continued to have seizures. Over next three months his seizure frequency went up and now he was having daily two seizures. He was labeled as post traumatic epilepsy and tried on multiple medicines but seizures did not stop but his scholastic performance went down significantly. His cognition significantly affected and he was taken out of school. He came to us after one year of illness.

We did video EEG, which showed that all his seizures are coming from the area of probable blood clot. We did another focused epilepsy protocol MRI after video EEG, which revealed that it is not blood clot but abnormal brain area called as cortical dysplasia; developmental abnormality of brain. After through counseling and consent, patient was taken for epilepsy surgery. Brain surgery on dysplasia is quite tedious and time consuming and requires many gadgets like neuronavigation, electrocorticography and decisions are to be taken during surgery. He underwent successful surgery and his lesion was taken out
completely. Histopathology revealed dysplasia as we thought before surgery. He is seizure free for last one and half years. He is enjoying normal life, goes to school and passed third standard. His cognition, learning and social behavior has returned to normalcy.
